Frequently Asked Questions

What does "dpi" mean?

“DPI” stands for “Dots Per Inch,” and it describes how detailed your scanned image is. More dots = more detail. If you ever plan on printing your scanned images, you want them to be scanned at 300 dpi. This ensures the image won’t be blurry. By default, we scan at 600 dpi, which is even more detailed, and better suited for higher-quality prints. We can also scan at higher resolutions for an added cost.

What are JPEG and Tiff files?

“JPEG” (said “jay-peg”) and “TIFF” (said “tiff”) are two kinds of picture files. JPEG files are smaller and easy to share by email or text message. They look great for everyday viewing and regular prints. TIFF files are much larger and keep the most detail, which is best for big prints or saving a “master copy” of an important photo. If you’re unsure, JPEG is usually plenty; if you want the very best quality for printing later, choose TIFF. By default we scan your images as JPEGs, but can provide as TIFFs for an added cost.

Will my original photos be returned?

Yes. We handle everything carefully and return your originals exactly as they came. We do our best to preserve the original order we receive them in, however, if they are given to us loose in a box, it may be trickier to keep them in order.

Will scanning damage my photos?

No. Scanning is non-destructive. We use clean equipment, cotton gloves, and gentle handling. However, for very old or fragile photos, any amount of handling has the potential to damage them. We will usually discuss this with you before accepting your photos, to be mindful if there are any very old or fragile images.

How long will it take?

Typical photo projects (200–1,000 images) take about 2–7 days depending on size and our queue. Rush service is available.

Do you clean the photos before scanning?

We may do light, dry cleaning (dust/loose particles) if needed. We don’t use liquids or chemicals that could harm prints.

Do I need to sort or label photos first?

Not required, but grouping by album/event helps. Use rubber bands or envelopes—please avoid tape or sticky notes on the prints.

Is it safe to mail my photos?

Yes—use a sturdy box, zip-top bags inside, and include a simple inventory note to help us know that everything arrived. We return everything tracked and insured.

What about photos stuck in “magnetic” albums or to glass?

We won’t peel or risk damage. We’ll use a non-destructive method (overhead/book scanning) to capture the page cleanly.

Will you fix faded colors, red-eye, or minor flaws?

Basic color/exposure correction is included. Deeper restoration (scratches, tears, heavy fading) is available as a retouching add-on.
